We will visit the plantations were shocking part in everyday life in Louisiana. They were huge mansions and luxury properties with many acres of vegetation in which hundreds of slaves grew cotton, sugar cane, snuff, rice etc. After the American Civil War, and emancipation of slaves in 1863 began to disintegrate the plantation system, but many of the mansions of these plantations have been able to keep up to date giving us an idea of the majestic lifestyle of the time.
 
  • Oak Alley: Is located on the Mississippi River, between the cities of New Orleans and Baton Rouge. She is known as The Great Lady of the River Road and it is spectacular. It has a path of giant oaks, centenaries, and the house is in Greek revival style. You can also have lunch in the restaurant. There are guided tours with people dressed in ancient costumes and last between 35 and 40 minutes.
  • Nottoway: On the western banks of the Mississippi River, southwest of Baton Rouge and northwest of New Orleans, stands a stunning and truly awe-inspiring Greek and Italianate style “White Castle”. This is Nottoway Plantation, the South’s largest antebellum mansion, and the mere fact that she actually is still standing is a tribute to the tenacity, courage and commitment of many people throughout her history. Nottoway has survived the Civil War, a variety of owners, and years of decline and disrepair to become a favorite destination for visitors the world over.
