Bioluminous Bay - San Juan

San Juan City, San Juan, Puerto Rico

One of the island’s many natural wonders, see the water glowing as you paddle in this magical bay.

You’ll experience one of the natural wonders of our island and one of the most beautiful in the world. Take a kayak ride in a secluded pond located in the northeast zone in Fajardo Natural Reserve, led by seasoned tour guides, to gaze upon the overwhelming beauty of the water. Before boarding, you’re instructed on how to row properly, safety measures and activities allowed in the trip. This phenomena happens thanks to a type of eukaryote organisms called “dinoflagellates”, a luminescent kind of plankton that during the day gets charged by solar energy to later at night release it as a soft glow when stirred or paddled. They were called “magical waters” by the sailors that cruised through them only to be mesmerized by the seemingly magical glow.
